Thoughtful discussion of the historical examples, but generalizing the causes of desperation ... did the people's desperation stem from poverty, hunger, oppression?
The contemporary example, while apt, seems to invert the issue: in the countries involved, the government is decidedly illiberal, while the liberal goals of the people are not yet clear. The government they choose to replace autocracy will show us the extent to which they support or reject liberalism.
