o   Muammar Gaddafi
·         came into power in 1969 and has ruled ever since
·         overthrew the king at 27
·         called himself the revolutionary leader of Libya
·         officially set up peoples' committees
§  although they had virtually no power
·         established the Libyan Arab Republic that was later renamed Jamahiriya
§  capitalism and socialism combined with Islamic ideas



o   Why they rejected liberalism in the first place
·         Gaddafi was someone new that they thought would lead them to a better time for the population
·         Thought that Gaddafi would be a better leader than the current king
                  ·     The king wasn't giving the people many rights, freedoms, or a good quality of life

Answer:
                Although it is not unlikely that a Totalitarian regime could be established with the rejection of liberalism, it is not a must for the rejection of Liberalism.

  1. I would like you to address to issues in your presentation:
    1) the current conflicts in Africa & Middle East are in response to years of totalitarian rule (liberalism was rejected in the past); the people are now clamoring for something else, though what that is isn't clear. Why do you think they rejected liberalism when they supported the leadership they're protesting now?

    2) Answer the question at some point, please.
